These inexpensive Maui activities have made some of our most unforgettable memories. Out of the hundreds of things to do, these are some of our most favorite inexpensive Maui activities. The best part is our favorites won't cost you the whole sugar cane field.
Nakalele Blowhole
The
Nakalele Blowhole
in north Maui is a must-see in our opinion. It costs only the gas (and the rental car) to drive to it and the prepared sack lunch. The hike down to it is relatively short -- about 20-30 minutes, and is well worth it.
So put your walking/running shoes or hiking boots on, and let's take a look at this Maui wonder!
Dragon's Teeth
Have you ever seen lava bleached white by the ocean spray, and shaped into teeth of a dragon? If the answer is "no," then you will probably enjoy visiting the
Dragon's Teeth
in Kapalua, West Maui.
West Maui Drive
Here are some of the things you can see or visit, in addition to the Nakalele Blowhole, when you take the
West Maui Drive
around West Maui Mountain: mushroom-shaped rock, bellstone and Olivine Pools, to name a few.
Iao Needle
My wife and I had visited
Iao Needle
(pronounced "eye ow") nearly ten years earlier in 1997 during our first Maui trip. It is one of the more beautiful places you will enjoy visiting here. You will also have the unique vantage point of being able to view West Maui Mountain from the "inside." This photo (below) is not the Iao Needle, but some of the mountainous terrain directly south in Iao Valley. (Click on the photo to see several Iao Needle photos.)
Polipoli State Park
Did you know that inside
Polipoli State Park,
located on the west slopes of Haleakala, you can take a beautiful hike through an actual redwood forest in Maui? It was well worth the visit. This photo (below) was taken at the head of Redwood Trail.
Haleakala Crater
Baby, it's cold outside! You wouldn't think so, but at 5:00 in the morning on the top of
Haleakala Crater
it is! Wrapped in coats, blankets from our condo and each other, this is one of the most incredible sights we have ever seen. Watching the sun creep out over the horizon and lift into the sky leaves you breathless.
The Road to Hana
It's long. . . but it's worth it! Never again will you see so many waterfalls and pools that call your name.
The Road to Hana
culminates at the Seven Sacred Pools. We actually only climbed four of them. How far will you go?
Sugar Cane Train
If you (or your kids) love trains as much as our boys do this inexpensive Maui activity is a must! Circling from Lahaina to Puukolii and back, a ride on the
Sugar Cane Train
will show you all the beauty of Maui from the coach car of an unforgettable real working historic steam engine. The conductor is more than knowledgeable. He's practically a one man show complete with ukulele and musical repertoire!
Sightseeing on Front Street
A shoppers paradise! Quaint shops, restaurants and historical spots line
Front Street
in "Old Lahaina." Our favorite discovery was the Bubba Gump's Shrimp Shop and Restaurant. As a tribute to the movie "Forest Gump," it's worth a trip inside if for nothing else to see the movie memorabilia.
Maui Ocean Center
This was a great day activity to do with our kids. The
Maui Ocean Center
offers many hands on activities that our kids loved. How often can a three-year old say they've touched a starfish in Maui? The drive is not too far--but far enough to lull little ones to sleep. . . .
Snorkeling In Maui
Change your view of the island to an underwater perspective by
snorkeling in Maui.
There are countless places to snorkel here with amazing views of marine life of all kinds. Our first snorkeling excursion took us to Pu'u Keka'a, also known as Black Rock, Maui's westernmost point and part of Kaanapali Beach.
Sandcastle Contest
A tradition our whole family has come to love is the
Sandcastle Contest Day.
Our kids have a ball building tunnels and mountains and the adults take the challenge very seriously! (At this point you may want to put on your sunglasses - if you haven't already - to avoid the glare of our obscenely white selves.)
