The purpose of our Maui Activities Wish List page is simple. Here you will find activities that we have never done before--but hope to do--during our December 2006 trip to Maui.
Part of the fun that preceeds a family vacation is to think about, anticipate and plan together some activities that are new to the group.
My guess is we'll keep adding to this activities list throughout the year. By the time December 2006 rolls around we will have enough activities that we'll have to save some for the following trip. It's always fun to think of one more reason to return to Maui!
Helicopter Tours
Several companies offer a variety of Maui helicopter tours that can include viewing some or all of the following: the West Maui Mountains, the island of Molokai (just west of Maui), waterfalls and beaches of East Maui including
Oheo Gulch (a.k.a. the Seven Sacred Pools) and Haleakala Crater.
I recently spoke to a friend of mine who has been to Maui several times. He told me he takes a Maui helicopter tour each time he visits the island: "There are things you will see from the air that you could never see from the ground, including 'hidden' waterfalls invisible from the road but from the air are easily seen."
It's sounds like a bird's eye view of Maui that would be nothing less than spectacular, and now a must-do on our Maui Activities Wish List.
ATV/Quad Tours
Not only can you hike parts of Haleakala Crater, you can also now take an ATV/quad tour of this scenic place. For me (Scott), this was an activity that had to be placed on our Maui Activities Wish List.
Submarine Adventures
If you don't like to scuba dive, you don't have to miss the beauty of Maui's ocean-scape and marine life when you are in a submarine with a view.
Jet Skiing
This sounds like a lot of fun, and an opportunity to see and enjoy Maui in an exhilarating perspective.
Note: Jet skiing (like parasailing) is an activity that is only permitted from May 16 through December 14. The State of Hawaii made a law prohibiting both jet skiing and parasailing from December 16 to May 15 to protect the Humpback Whale while it makes its yearly migration from Alaska.
We will arrive in Maui about a week or so after December 14, 2006, thus missing the window for this activity. No worries, though. Besides the fact that it is a very good thing to protect the humpback whales, I can look forward to jet skiing on a subsequent trip.
Kayaking Tours
This is an activity that is not only environmentally friendly to the ocean but should also give you a cardio workout.
Jeep Tour
Rent a jeep or other four wheel drive vehicle for an enjoyable excursion around the southern and western end of Maui. Most visitors to Maui (present company included) don't take advantage of this scenic tour.
You could see two of the most recent Haleakala lava flows that reached the ocean, dating back less than 500 years to 800 years old. This is a trip I'd like to do at least once.
Biking Down Haleakala
We have seen two wonderful
sunrises at Haleakala
on two separate trips to Maui. Both times we drove up and back in our rental vehicles. Unfortunately, biking down Haleakala has never made it into our agenda. It really does look like a lot of fun. So we have now officially added it to our Maui Activities Wish List.
We hope to enjoy many of the adventures listed our Maui Activities Wish List during our December 2006 trip. We will then report back to you with our best photos and descriptions.
