4th Annual Maui Sugar Plantation Festival Saturday, August 5, 2006, 9:30 am to 2 pm on the grounds of the Alexander & Baldwin Sugar Museum on 3957 Hansen Road, across from the HC&S sugar mill in Puunene. Festival-goers will enjoy this rare opportunity to sample the cultures that contributed their traditions to plantation life—from foods and cuisine to arts and customs—all in one setting, during this one annual event! Cultures represented willinclude Hawaiian, Chinese, Japanese, Okinawan, Portuguese, Puerto Rican, Korean and Filipino. The historic, beautifully-restored “Claus” Spreckels steam locomotive, which started in the service of the Kahului Railroad in 1882, will make its annual appearance—it is the oldest restored steam locomotive in Hawaii. Admission and parking is free to the public, and a free shuttle service will also be available.Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl for Kids Sake Fundraiser August 5, 2006, 8 am to 3 pm at Wailuku Bowling Center in East Maui. Come enjoy an exciting day of fun helping Big Brothers Big Sisters of Maui at our 19th Annual Bowl for Kids Sake fundraiser. Sponsored by Marriott's Maui Ocean Club and Ritz Carlton Club. Enjoy watching a variety of cooking demonstrations by local celebrity chefs featuring the Maui Onion. The O-bon (or Bon) Dance is a Japanese Buddhist holiday to honor the departed spirits of one's ancestors, and will be held at Kahului Jodo Mission, 325 Laau in Kahului. New Actors Workshop with Terry Berliner August 19th, 2006 from 10 am to 2 pm at the Historic Iao Theater. Presented by Maui OnStage. New Actors Workshop is an introductory class open to aspiring actors, performers or public speakers with little or no prior experience in performance. The Acting Workshop is designed to introduce and utilize basic tools used in preparation for performance of any kind whether in a play, musical or public speaking situation. Open to adults of all ages (and high school juniors and seniors with instructor permission). Hula Festival at Maui Mall August 19 and 20th at the Maui Mall, 70 E Kaahumanu, Kahului, only five minutes from the airport and right across the street from the Kahului Harbor. Featuring HAPA, Raiatea Helm, George Kahumoku, Jr., Lono, OlaHou and more! Some of Hawaii’s finest musicians and vocalists contribute their considerable talents for this fundraiser for Mana’o Radio, to help ensure the continuation of non-commercial, non-profit, extremely eclectic radio on Maui. Mana’o Radio (91.5 FM) is entirely listener-supported, volunteer-operated, and dedicated to informing, entertaining, and educating through multi-cultural programming, including the support and promotion of local artists. A benefit celebration of 30 years of hula with Hokulani Holt-Padilla and Pa'u O Hi'iaka. The concert will feature performances from Pa'u O Hi'iaka, Halau Ke'alaokamaile, Kano'eau Dance Academy, Waiehu Sons, Holunape, five Miss Aloha Hula (Malia Petersen, Pi'ilani Smith, Natasha Akau, Jennifer Oyama, Maile Francisco), Tau Dance Company, and other special guests. Many of the performances will share some of the ways Pa’u O Hi'iaka and Hokulani influenced hula and Hawaiian culture on Maui and in the hula community. "The other Side": A special concert for all ages featuring Sarah Geronimo, the Philippines’ most popular teen Pop Princess and Star for a Night Grand Champion, with fellow “Champions” Mark Bautista, Jimmy Marquez and Kris Lawrence, accompanied by a live band. The night will showcase Sarah’s versatility as she belts out hits such as “Hollaback Girl”, love duets like “I Finally Found Someone, and other songs made famous by Thalia, Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston, as well as original Filipino music in Tagalog & English, topped off with her own hits from three multi-platinum albums!
