Pipi Holo Kaao / “Continuing the Story” Saturday, January 13, 2007 pa, 3:00 pm, Local Voices-TalkStory Series. Three hālau interpret, through chant dance and song, some of the stories of Pele that are specific to Maui. Na kumu hula Hokulani Holt-Padilla, Napua Greig & Kahulu Maluo-Huber bring their halau to The MACC’s pa, the river rock-faced outdoor grassy platform dedicated to the practice of Hawaiian cultural traditions such as this storytelling event. Witness To Time January 16 - February 11 at the Schaefer International Gallery, 11:00 am- 5:00 pm, Tuesday - Sunday, FREE. In partnership with the Maui Historical Society and Bailey House Museum, a presentation of the landscape paintings of Edward Bailey (1814 – 1903). A teacher and land surveyor as well as painter, Bailey captured the natural beauty of Maui in the late 19th century. Several contemporary Maui painters have been invited to capture their own connections to the land, for their personal view of Maui...one hundred years later. Jake Shimabukuro Thursday-Sunday, January 25-28, 2007, 7:30 pm at the McCoy Studio Theater, Local Voices-Mele Series. Known for lightning-fast fingers and revolutionary playing techniques, Jake is the young ‘ukulele virtuoso who shatters musical boundaries as he plays jazz, blues, funk, classical, bluegrass, folk, flamenco, and rock on the little 4-string Island instrument. Jake’s mission is to prove the ‘ukulele as “an untapped source of music with unlimited potential.” To that end, he can produce music at both ends of the spectrum: from hard-edged amplified sounds comparable to Jimi Hendrix, to delicately-extracted clear notes capable of evoking a smile or a tear. Campbell Brothers Sunday, January 28, 2007, 5:00 pm at the Castle Theater, Global Rhythms Series. Pedal steel guitarist Chuck Campbell is the recipient of a National Heritage Fellowship; he and his lap steel-playing brother Darick are two of the finest in the tradition of African-American gospel music, bringing a rich and compelling variety of material from the sanctuary to the concert hall. A high-energy rhythm section backs them up, featuring another brother, Phil, on electric guitar and his son Carlton on drums, with gutsy gospel vocals by Katie Jackson.
