Brothers CAzimero - Lei Day Concert Wednesday, May 2, 2007, 7:30 pm at the Castle Theater, Ho‘onanea Series. A Lei Day Concert tradition! Each year Robert and Roland Cazimero play their ever-popular Lei Day Concert at the Waikïkï Shell, then come to The MACC for a ‘Maui May Day’ Concert. Kumu Kahua Theatre: Kamau by Alani Apio Thursday-Friday, May 3-4, 2007, 7:30 pm at the McCoy Studio Theater, Local Voices-TalkStory Series. "A moving and powerful piece on the nature of personal and cultural compromise." ( Honolulu Advertiser ) Alika, a Hawaiian tour guide working to support a hanai family, is offered a promotion –– then told that the company plans to build a hotel where Alika's family has lived and fished for generations. Weighed down with responsibilities and confused by alcohol, Alika struggles with his conscience. No pat answers or one-dimensional characters are offered, as the playwright explores the complex interrelationships, moral ambiguities and harsh realities of life in contemporary Hawaii. International Festival of Canoes May 12-26, 2007 is considered “Maui's Signature Cultural Heritage Event.” Master Carvers from nations across the Pacific come together with carvers from Hawaii to create real canoes from wood logs during this two-week event in Lahaina, held daily 9:00 am – 5:00 pm (at the two parks on Front Street). Each nation is welcomed in a traditional awa ceremony at Kamehameha Iki beach park (May 12). Enjoy demos of old-style surfboard, drum making, Hawaiian house thatching, cultural arts lessons, and a crafts fair daily in Banyan Tree Park. On Friday (May 25), see the Parade of Canoes along Front Street at 6:00 pm. Watch the ceremonial launch of completed canoes at 6:00 pm on Saturday (May 26), followed by an island food and music festival at Kamehameha Iki Beach Park. Free admission to most events.
Akiko Kotani: SOLO Drawings Kaori Okaji: Essentially Empty May 13 - June 24, 2007, 11:00 am - 5:00 pm at the Schaefer International Gallery, Tuesday – Sunday, FREE. Two women with a passion for paper will divide the gallery for a dual exhibition. Akiko Kotani’s exhibit features two kinds of drawings, with direct observation of nature fused with abstraction and her unique perception. This Hawaii born artist transforms her distinctive way of seeing and highly personal language of mark-making into the realm of art. Born in Tokyo and now living on Hawaii Island, Kaori Ukaji is best known for her work with graphite and large-scale installation works on paper: compelling free-from shapes with layered, sculptural forms. Aloha to the Whales May 15, 2007. After a winter of mating and calving in Maui's warm waters, the humpback whales are on their way to the waters of Alaska and the north Pacific for a summer of feeding. To bid them farewell, Pacific Whale Foundation is offering an "Aloha to the Whales" cruise on May 15 - the last whalewatch cruise that Pacific Whale Foundation will be offering whalewatches this season. Join the Pacific Whale Foundation staff in thanking the whales for their presence here this winter, and wishing them safe travels during their migration. Cruise is from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on the Ocean Spirit out of Maalaea Harbor. Check-in is at 12:30 p.m. at the Pacific Whale Foundation Marine Resource Center in Maalaea Harbor Village.
