Have you ever wondered about the names of Maui film and television shows shot in Maui's tropical splendor? Over the years, a wide variety of Maui films and television shows have been filmed on this beautiful island.
Read on and you will find a list of selected Maui movie and television shows (see below) that were in whole or in part filmed in Maui or on one of it’s close neighbors, Lanai and Molokai (both islands are a part of Maui County –
(see map)
.
Of course, other famous movies not listed below, like Elvis Presley’s “Blue Hawaii” (filmed at the Polynesian Cultural Center on Oahu), were filmed elsewhere in Hawaii.
To increase the number of Maui film and television productions and of those in Hawaii generally, the governor of Hawaii recently signed into law (May 10, 2006) Act 88. The way this new law should attract more Maui film and television based productions is that it changes Maui’s tax incentive for these companies from 4% to 20% (the same increase for Kauai and the Big Island), and Oahu’s tax incentive improved from 4% to 15%.
The hope is that Act 88 will generate tax revenues, provide jobs and income for residents, support tourism and the natural beauty of Hawaii, and enable the state to effectively compete against other locations that offer similar tax incentives for the film industry.
It is interesting to note that studios of recent major movies had considered Hawaii but instead chose other venues that offered better incentive packages. Walt Disney Studios with “Pirates of the Caribbean” (second and third sequels) chose the Bahamas over Hawaii.
Similarly, Paramount and Columbia with “The Longest Yard” chose New Mexico, and NBC with “Surface” drama series chose North Carolina. Maui as well as filming officials from the other Hawaiian Islands believe Act 88 will place them on a more competitive playing field.
If a trip to Maui is somewhere on the radar screen, you may want to rent one of these (if available) to get you “in the mood” for Maui. Do you recognize any of these Maui film and television shows?
