Two words: Maui Golf. Translation? Welcome to golfing paradise...so I've been told. How could it not be, with 18 tropical courses to choose from?
Bad news first: I golf about twice a year, but have never have golfed in Maui. (For you avid golfers reading this right now that are in disbelief that I have passed up golfing in "golf heaven" three times now, please forgive.)
Now the good news: My wife's grandfather, (or "The Colonel" as his family lovingly calls him), has golfed the Kaanapali Courses several times so we got the "inside scoop" on one of the best golfing experiences in Maui. We lovingly refer to this page as "The Colonel's Golf Club."
The 36 hole Kaanapali Golf Course is actually two courses, Tournament North and Resort South. The Colonel has golfed in many places around the U.S. and felt this Maui Golf experience was an outstanding one.
One point he mentioned was that you do have to deal with the wind here, as you do on most of Maui's courses. (I've heard more distracting than the wind are the incredible ocean vistas--I have seen those!). In addition, the way that these courses are laid out, the fairways seemed to change direction more often than on other courses.
So, on one hole you may be golfing into the wind. But on the next, the wind may be coming at you from the right, then on the next, it's coming from behind you.
The Colonel also enjoyed playing at the Dunes at Maui Lani Golf Course (public). Being a public course, it was easier to play, and while he was there, the wind did not play as much of a factor.
So don't take my word for it, believe others when they say that your Maui golf experience will be the chance of a lifetime, right here on one of the most beautiful islands in the world.
