Skin Care
We have mentioned this elsewhere, but it is highly recommended that you use sun block with an SPF of 15 or more to avoid sunburn. Our first trip to Maui (1997) -- while very enjoyable -- could have been less painful if we had applied sun block at least once an hour while on the beach at Kaanapali. I thought I could avoid a burn because generally I tan very well, but that just wasn’t the case.

That night we both had some painful first degree burns on our necks and backs. The following several days on the beach were spent wearing a t-shirt both in and out of the water to protect us from making our sunburns worse. Needless to say, we avoided sunburns during our next two trips to Maui by always applying sun block with a minimum SPF of 30 every 45 minutes.

Water Safety – Drinking
Maui tap water (i.e., potable water) is safe to drink in Maui, Hawaii.

As a warning, please avoid drinking freshwater directly from streams and ponds because they may contain leptospirosis. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that affects humans and animals, and occurs worldwide but is most common in temperate or tropical climates….It is a recreational hazard for campers or those who participate in outdoor sports in contaminated areas and has been associated with swimming, wading, and whitewater rafting in contaminated lakes and rivers.
