One of the best experiences we've had snorkeling in Maui was an excursion we did ourselves to Black Rock on Ka'anapali Beach. When we swam out to Black Rock I felt like we were far away from civilization--or at least from our condo. I have an unhealthy fear of being eaten by sharks and eels and I get a little chlostrophobic in snorkel gear.
I just think when you put your head in water you should hold your breath!
But even with all my hang-ups we saw some amazing views of coral, other marine life and scuba divers as we made our way around Black Rock. My husband, on the other hand, has no quams about being eaten by sharks, eels or confining snorkel gear and was excited to get scuba certified.
Like we said before snorkeling in Maui (or other ocean perspectives) gives you a whole new outlook on the island. Mainly because it seems you are on the outside looking in. For us Southwest USA mainlanders, where the space is wide open, being able to actually swim off the island to this beautiful place was unbelievable.
Another inexpensive idea for your snorkel trips in Maui is to buy an inexpensive underwater camera. You probably won't get hired as a camera person for the Discovery Channel but you'll have some unique memories to take home.
Snorkeling in Maui leads to all kinds of adventures.
One day we went out with some fish food (the kind you buy that they allow in the ocean) and tried to take pictures feeding the fish. The only problem was the fish got a little skiddish sometimes. It was not a lost cause as we came back with unforgetable pictures of almost feeding fish!
