Taking a ride on the Sugar Cane Train is top on our son list of Maui activities - even more fun than playing on the beach! I told him that Myrtle (the engine) is the Hawaiian cousin of the famous Thomas the Tank Engine.
Yes, kids! You're in the right place for your clue! And if you haven't yet found Kids' Internet Treasure Hunt, check it out now!
Known as a heritage railway, the Sugar Cane Train in the city of Lahaina chugs along on the Lahaina-Kaanapali and Pacific Railroad. It has become one of Maui's most popular attractions over the years.
Myrtle, the steam engine, travels about six miles of track at a comfortable Hawaiian pace, while the conductor notes points of interest (such as vegetation, sugar cane fields, old engine sheds and golf resorts) and entertains passengers Hawaiian-style.
Of utmost importance to our son was the turn table at the Lahaina station as well as the 325 foot curved wooden trestle. He didn't quite appreciate the railroad history, ocean and West Maui Mountains views as much as we did. But in Maui, there's something for everyone!
Roundtrip tickets are under $20 for adults, under $14 for kids 3-12 and munchkins under 3 ride free. Discounts are given for online reservations. Departure times vary for each station (Puukolii Station, Kaanapali Station or the Lahaina Station) so check online or call before you go.
Also available are tickets for the Dinner Train with a Sunset BBQ dinner and show, catered by the Sheraton Maui. With our little boys (ages 7,4 and 18 months), we haven't yet braved the Dinner Train--but it sounds like a lot of fun!
