The ammenities at The Whaler on Kaanapali Beach keep you close to home on an island far away. This picture was taken from the 12th/top floor.
In the background you can see Black Rock (famous for its
snorkeling
and scuba diving).
If you're wondering why we are dressed up in such obvious non-beach wear, it was because we were heading out to attend Sunday services at a local church.
Staying at The Whaler had several advantages for our family. The condos (which are independently owned) come with a kitchen, microwave, stove, oven, full-sized refrigerator and some come with a washer and dryer.
We were fortunate enough to get the washer and dryer. I think I did more laundry there than I do at home! It was nice to be able to get the sand and dirt out quickly instead of having to go to a laundromat and wait.
And while it is fun to eat out while on vacation, it can get old quickly on extended stay vacations. Sometimes, a home cooked meal really hits the spot.
And when you're children have had a fun-filled but tiring day at the beach, if you're staying in a condo you don't have to round them up, clean them up and take them to a restaurant that they will not enjoy because they're tired. Which, in turn will negatively affect your eating experience.
One activity that we enjoyed at The Whaler was a late afternoon barbeque. Just south of the South Whaler building is a grassy area that has three barbeque grills and some granite picnic tables with (of course) a great view of the ocean (does a bad view even exist?).
Some great burgers and hot dogs came out of that barbeque. I think the novelty of doing something so "homey" all the way over on Maui made the experience even more unique to the kids. The adults were just glad everyone was happy and that clean up was minimal.
All in all, we were very happy being able to have the option to go out somewhere or serve macaroni and cheese, PB&J's, hot dogs, cereal and snacks of all kinds on a moment's notice. And that refrigerator came in handy for me to chill our bounty of Mouna Loa Macadamia Nuts!
The Whaler's Village and several restaurants are within walking distance of the Whaler Condominiums. This is a great early morning-get your blood pumping walk, or a nice leisurely stroll at the end of the day. We chose the sleep in-stroll in the evening option. Our stroll took us everynight into Whaler's Village.
We quickly replaced the pounds we had pain-stakingly shed before our trip by our nightly stops at the Haagan Daaz store in the Village. It actually got so addicting that when we got home it felt weird not to eat ice cream after dinner every night.
